Sunbed Maintenance in Practice: Blocked Air Filters and Worn UV Lamps

Maintenance visit:

A sunbed can light up and still have two problems that are easy to miss: restricted cooling airflow and low UV output. Sun&Service found both during a routine service visit on 3 November 2026, after a prolonged period without regular checks. The photographs show the equipment and the work carried out during that visit.

What the inspection revealed

The dust filters at the air intake were completely blocked. The original black filter material had also dried out and become so brittle that it crumbled on contact. Cleaning alone would not have been enough: the material was no longer intact.

Why airflow matters

The cooling system carries heat away from the lamps and internal components. When an intake filter is blocked, less air can pass through and parts of the machine can run hotter than intended. UV tubes are designed to work within a particular temperature range. Operating outside that range can affect their output, while prolonged overheating can shorten their useful life and increase the risk of faults in electronic components.

These are risks associated with restricted cooling, not evidence that an electronic component had already failed. The low UV output found on this visit was assessed separately; the inspection did not establish how much the restricted airflow contributed to lamp wear.

Work completed and follow-up still needed

Sun&Service replaced the deteriorated black filters with compatible white filter material. During the visit, an irradiance check also showed weak UV output from lamps that were at the end of their useful life, even though the tubes still lit up.

A complete replacement of the UV tubes and starters was recommended and had not been carried out at the time of this report. The filter replacement addressed the deteriorated intake filters; it was not a full refurbishment or a statement of compliance.
