Taking over a salon with existing sunbeds: what to check

Taking over an established beauty or tanning salon often means acquiring the equipment already installed: sunbeds, tanning booths, lasers and other professional technologies.

At first glance, this may look like an advantage. The machines are already in place and may have been used for years. But there is an important question: do you really know the history and condition of the equipment you are acquiring?

A working machine is not necessarily ready for professional use

In professional tanning, it is common to find sunbeds that have been installed for many years and passed through several owners.

The machine switches on, the lamps work and there are no obvious problems. That does not establish that all requirements for its professional use have been checked.

Identify the model and origin, the available documentation, previous maintenance work and current technical condition. For sunbeds, also consider UV output, lamp compatibility and applicable safety requirements.

Technical operation and documentation are separate matters; both need attention. Requirements must be checked for the country where the equipment will be used. Italian rules should not be assumed to apply unchanged elsewhere in Europe.

What if the documents are missing?

A previous owner may not have retained manuals, conformity documentation or service records. Some machines are very old and may have been made by businesses that no longer operate.

This does not automatically mean that the machine must be replaced. Equally, routine maintenance may not resolve every issue. Each case needs an individual assessment, distinguishing what can be checked technically from the documentation questions that remain open.

The principle applies beyond sunbeds

The same approach is useful for lasers and other facial or body-treatment equipment. Each type may have specific requirements for identification, documentation, safety and professional use.

When taking over a business, do not assess equipment solely by its financial value or the fact that it currently works.

Establish the starting point before deciding

A preliminary review can help you understand what you are acquiring. If you have already taken over the salon and are unsure about the sunbeds' documentation or condition, clarify the situation with appropriate local technical and regulatory specialists before continuing to use them with clients.

Replacement is not always necessary, but a technical intervention cannot always solve everything. The correct decision depends on the individual equipment and its circumstances.

Identifying an installed sunbed

Sun&Service has experience in professional tanning equipment. For an initial enquiry about replacement UV lamps, send the make and model, clear photographs of the identification plate and the markings on the fitted lamps.

These details provide a starting point for reviewing possible supply options. They do not amount to certification of the equipment or a promise of on-site inspection abroad.

Start with the EU lamp supply page and the guides to UV tubes and high-pressure replacement lamps.

This is general information. Applicable requirements and the scope of any technical assessment must be established for the specific machine and location.
