Used sunbed UV lamps and WEEE: planning proper disposal

When replacing sunbed tubes or UV lamps, the removed light sources should not simply be treated as ordinary mixed waste. Appropriate collection and treatment matter for environmental protection and recovery of materials.

Customers arranging their own lamp replacement also need to plan what happens to the old sources. This guide explains what information to collect and which questions to ask the competent service in your country.

What does WEEE mean?

WEEE means waste electrical and electronic equipment. The EU framework supports separate collection and appropriate treatment. National implementation and collection arrangements must be checked locally; there is no single booking or disposal procedure that applies identically across Europe.

See the European Commission's WEEE overview and Directive 2012/19/EU, consolidated text for the framework. These references do not replace confirmation of the requirements for your waste and location.

Identify the lamp, not just its UV output

“UV” describes the source's emission; it is not enough on its own to determine the correct waste classification or collection channel. Identify the actual lamp technology and distinguish removed lamps from the complete sunbed.

Fluorescent tubes are fragile and contain mercury. Prevent breakage and follow the collection operator's handling and packaging instructions. High-pressure sources also require identification rather than an assumption that every UV lamp follows the same route.

You have replaced the lamps: what next?

  1. Identify the sources. Collect makes, model references, codes and photographs of the markings.
  2. State their origin and quantity. Explain whether they came from your own salon or from work at customers' premises. Provide the number, dimensions and known or estimated weight.
  3. Confirm the route before moving the waste. Ask a competent local collection scheme or authorised operator about acceptance, registration, charges, packaging, transport and the documentation required for your case.
  4. Protect the lamps from damage. Follow the chosen service's packaging instructions. Report already broken lamps before arranging collection and request the appropriate handling instructions.

Do not assume that a municipal recycling centre accepts waste from your business. Confirm eligibility and accepted waste types with its operator first.

Italian RAEE references: examples, not Europe-wide procedures

The Italian version discusses RAEE, Italy's term for WEEE, and Legislative Decree 49/2014. In that context, the distinction between household and professional WEEE is not determined solely by whether the holder is a business; the nature, quantity and potential use also matter. The Italian WEEE Coordination Centre provides further information.

R5 is an Italian grouping for light sources in household WEEE collection. It is not a universal European collection label. The Italian article refers to Ecolamp's source categories, including fluorescent and high-intensity discharge lamps, among others.

Ecolamp services in Italy

The original guide describes ExtraLamp as a service for lighting installers, subject to registration and specific conditions. Salon operators should ask Ecolamp which service, if any, applies to their activity rather than assuming eligibility for a different professional category.

It also refers to an older Collection Point page. The current availability of any point, delivery route, threshold or charge must be confirmed directly before arranging transport. These Italian references are retained to explain the original article, not as services available throughout Europe.

Check current arrangements for your location

For the sources removed from your salon, confirm the specific case with your local waste authority, collection scheme or authorised operator. Conditions and procedures can change.

Sun&Service is not a waste collection centre and does not offer a waste disposal service.

For new light sources, see professional UV lamp supply, replacement UV tubes and high-pressure sunbed lamps. Supply enquiries and waste arrangements are separate matters.
